Recently, our Motorplex mobile repair team responded to a call for emergency roadside assistance in Washington State involving a trailer with a leaking airbag. What started as a straightforward parts replacement turned into a complex on-site repair, requiring experience, adaptability, and the right tools to get the job done safely.
Diagnosing the Problem on Arrival
Before heading out, our technician connected directly with the driver to confirm the issue and gather key details, including the VIN. This allowed us to source the correct airbags ahead of time. Doing so helps us reduce downtime during emergency mobile repairs in Washington State.
After picking up the required parts, our tech arrived on-site, cleared security, and located the unit. A quick inspection confirmed:

- The passenger-side airbag was starting to crack, but not leaking yet. It looked like it had been replaced more recently, given the cleaner mountain hardware.

When a “Quick Repair” Isn’t So Quick
In theory, replacing a trailer airbag is a standard job. In reality, especially on older equipment like this aging trailer, it can become much more involved.
As work began, our technician encountered seized mounting bolts on the airbag assembly. Corrosion and age had effectively locked the components in place, making removal difficult without additional measures.
To proceed safely, the technician contacted dispatch to confirm he could take the additional labour time. The customer had a repair cost cap, and we didn’t want to blow it. Then, he removed the ABS module to gain proper access to the work area and used heat and cutting tools to break free the seized mounting hardware. Finally, he carefully cut out the damaged airbag without compromising the surrounding components.
It wasn’t as quick as we’d hoped, but it was still fast and efficient given the circumstances. This is to be inspected with emergency mobile repair!
Keeping the Trailer Stable During Repair
One of the biggest risks during an airbag failure is instability. With one suspension bag compromised, the trailer can shift or sit unevenly, making safe removal and installation more difficult.
To manage this, our technician temporarily plugged the air lines and used the remaining three airbags to raise and stabilize the trailer. This created enough working clearance to safely remove the damaged unit and install the new one.
Once the replacement airbag was installed, all lines were reconnected, and the system was tested thoroughly. No leaks were detected, and the suspension system was ready to go. After completing the repair, the technician cleaned up the work area, confirmed everything with the driver, and cleared the call.
What could have required a tow, offloading, and extended downtime was resolved entirely on-site. That’s the value of emergency roadside assistance in Washington State done right.
