Motorplex by FleetEasy offers repairs, maintenance and on-site services for fleets, including equipment and trailers. Recently, Motorplex Spokane was called into a busy loading yard to fix the landing gear on a trailer. Offering on-site repairs allows fleet managers to get the job done quickly, with limited inconvenience and costly downtime.

We had a few hiccups along the way, but our experienced technician got the job done.

On-Site Trailer Repair Part I

When New Parts Don’t Fit Quite Right

Our mobile equipment repair unit arrived at the customer’s loading yard with all the gear and supplies required to fabricate new landing gear for the trailer in question. He jacked up the front of the trailer and removed the landing gear legs. Several fasteners were seized, so he heated them with a torch to loosen them.

Once the new legs were mounted and he started to install the cross shaft, it became clear that it was too short for the new legs. The job would have to continue the next day.

Snowfall Means an In-Shop Trailer Repair

The next morning, we woke up to a lot of snow, and it was expected to snow all day. We had to tow the trailer into the shop because welding in wet weather poses a safety risk. The team worked together to get the tow approved, gather needed supplies for the repair and get the shop ready to receive it.

Once in our fleet services shop in Spokane, our tech was able to make the repairs and get the job done. Here’s how he did it:

“I mocked up braces and marked where the fabricated tabs needed to be welded. Then I heated up and shaped the mounting tabs, prepped the surface, and welded the tabs to the landing gear legs. I put in some holes in tabs for fasteners and secured all braces to the landing gear. I mocked up a new cross brace and welded it to the correct length. Once the welds were cool, I painted over the bare metal and welds.”

We tested the legs, removed the jacks and delivered the trailer back to the happy customer.

The Value of On-Site Fleet Services

On-site trailer repair and other mobile fleet repairs allow work to begin immediately without the delays and costs associated with towing in Spokane. For many mechanical and structural issues, completing repairs where the trailer is parked can reduce downtime, minimize operational disruption, and allow technicians to assess the equipment under the exact conditions in which it failed.

In this case, Motorplex technicians began repairs but ran into a minor roadblock with part sizing. However, the unexpected snowfall the next day created an unsafe environment for welding operations. Always, technician safety and repair quality take priority.
