Choosing the right winter tires for commercial fleets is important. Not only are tires critical for hauling loads efficiently and safely, but they’re also the point of contact between your trucks and the road. The semi-truck winter tires you choose will greatly impact your drivers as they haul loads in slick conditions.

At Motorplex, we specialize in semi-truck fleet maintenance and repairs. In this article, we share tips to help you choose the best winter tires for commercial fleets.

The Benefits of Winter Tires

Winter tires are designed and manufactured to provide better grip for tires on icy and snowy roads. Their treads offer greater traction as well as biting edges. These biting edges will help grip onto snow and ice to make it more difficult for slipping to occur.

Tips for Choosing Tires

When it’s time to choose winter tires for your commercial fleet, here are three factors (among others) that you’ll want to pay attention to:

Hauling Capacity

First, you’ll want to evaluate the load-bearing capacity of the semi-truck winter tires you’re considering. For trucks hauling heavy loads, you must ensure that their tires can handle the added weight without taking away from grip capacity in snowy and icy conditions.

Traction

For your semi-truck fleet, you’ll want to choose winter tires that provide high traction ratings for better grip. Winter tires without excellent traction ratings won’t offer added safety for your drivers or equipment. The highest-rated tires will offer an AA traction rating. From there, ratings will descend, beginning at A and moving down to B and C. For mud and snow traction for semi-truck winter tires, look for the rating M+S.

Durability

Another critical component of choosing winter tires for your commercial fleet is durability. Washington State winters can be harsh, and your fleet may come up against many different conditions, including cold temperatures, ice, snow and sleet. Choose tires with the best lifespan for your trucks that are hauling over the winter.

When It’s Time to Replace Your Tires

As mentioned above, harsh winter conditions can affect your fleet’s winter tires. Yes, they have a recommended lifespan, but you’ll also want to have your fleet’s tires checked regularly to know when they need replacing. Ideally, check the tires at every pre- and post-trip inspection. One indicator that it’s time for a professional assessment of your fleet’s tires is when the tread starts to wear.
