The driveline consists of a few parts, but as a whole, it’s an essential part of a safe and moving vehicle. The driveline consists of axles, a driveshaft, wheels, a transfer case, and differential gears. Its function is to transfer the power generated from the engine to the axle and into the wheels.

When something goes wrong in any part of the driveline, it affects the movement and efficiency of the entire semi-truck. That’s why getting routine fleet driveline service is essential to maintain the system.

Lubrication is Important

As with most moving parts and gears in a vehicle, keeping the driveline lubricated is essential. That helps keep the parts moving smoothly, prevents overheating, and prevents premature breakdowns. However, before applying any lubrication, remove any traces of old grease. Otherwise, it risks new lubricant contaminating the old and creating dirty lubricant that can cause issues.

Check for Any Damage

Visual inspections are necessary to do regularly in addition to a routine fleet driveline service. Even small debris, such as rocks, grit, or salt, can result in more significant problems. While on the road, that debris can cause dents along the driveline or get stuck and jam up essential parts. If left alone, that can damage the driveline and potentially result in costly repairs. Not only will you need to book a semi-truck driveline service, but also repairs for the axle and transmission.

Check the Bearings

To start, check what type of bearings your semi-truck has and if they are still in good condition. Older bearings may be worn out, or their age makes them risky. Newer bearings can sometimes be a self-aligning style, which is useful but needs inspecting during a fleet driveline service.

Self-aligning bearings only allow for a positive or negative five-degree angle of deflection. Anything more or less will cause damage, so check that those bearings are still safe or if they need replacing.

Know the Movement Limits

With a driveline and all its parts, there are certain amounts of movement that occur for specific parts. If those limits are exceeded, it can very quickly cause damage.

For example, a U-joint has a maximum of just 0.006 inches. The up-and-down slip motions allow a maximum of 0.17 inches. Anything past those maximums will result in the failure of the part and damage to the driveline. Schedule a semi-truck driveline service immediately if you notice the limits are near maximum or keep creeping over.
